Award-winning hip-life artiste Kwaw Kesse, known in showbiz circles as Abodam, has revealed that most of his colleague musicians in Ghana cannot afford a decent meal and have to literally beg for food.

According to Abodam, most Ghanaian musicians, especially those who fall within the hip hop category, are living a false life. He said they pretend to be okay by dressing in expensive designer clothing when they appear in public but actually have nothing in their bank accounts because their songs are not doing well on the market and they have no other means of income.

Speaking to Delores Frempong Manso on her Delay TV show, Abodam said there were many times he had to buy food for well-known musicians whose songs are enjoying some good airplay.

He explained that having “your song played on radio does not mean there is money in your pocket” because Ghanaians generally do not buy original CDs as most people rather prefer to pirate the songs.

“So they rely on shows but how many shows are even held for a whole year in Ghana and at each show, how many musicians can be invited. So that is the problem. They wait to be invited to shows and if for a year there is no show, then they start to hustle but cannot openly admit this in public,” Abodam explained.

“The problem is that they do songs that do not last and we tend to copy foolishly. We always copy the Nigerians and they laugh at us and ask us to be original. How can a Ghanaian musician sing a song in Ghana and say ‘I dey kolo’? That is rubbish because it is a Nigerian expression and the Ghanaian fans would not fully understand the actual meaning of your song. If you are singing in Ghana, just go straight to the point and say ‘I dey craze’ or ‘I dey mad’ and your people will like you because you are original,” Abodam added.

When asked to mention the manes of the musicians he was referring to, Abodam said there was no need to drop any names because that would be below the belt.

He however said the musicians doing hip-hop and twi-pop are the most affected.

The host then mentioned the names of VIP, D-Cryme, Zigi (U say Wetin) and Stay Jay (Shashii wow o) for him to choose which of them fall within his category.

Abodam responded that VIP and D-Cryme are very good musicians who he has lots of respect for. Abodam said he has never heard of Zigi and his ‘U Say Wetin’ song because he does not listen to such songs. With regard to ‘Shashii Wowo’ by Stay Jay, Abodam said the ‘Shashii Wowo’ is a people’s song that would not last.

At a tender age, Cody Banks was introduced to hip-hop music by his older cousin Bizo Becee. The hip-hop phenomenon had traveled across the Atlantic to reach the shores of Ghana. The Gold-Coast as it was known then was a hub for the senseless slave trade and the former slaves, now a proud people have brought an art back to the motherland. It was love at first sight for the young listener. Cody started to mimic what he heard on the cassette player. In no time he started to rap and took a keen interest in the then fledging hip-life scene. His gritty style, yet so socially conscious lyrics had him compared to the late-legend 2pac.

Life was not always smooth sailing for Elvis Kwaku Agyeman. Throughout his middle school years, he was branded a misfit and gained popularity in school for this. But he knew he wanted to be known for his music and kept on practicing his skills anyway he could. In 2003, his father got transferred to another city for work. there cody had a chance to showcase some of his talent at parties and started to gain some notoriety for his work.

This all payed off when he went to high school. Then a seasoned rapper, formed a group in Kumasi Academy called Richy Rich. The group performed in school functions as well as making appearances at neighboring schools. He then signed to Hold da Mic Entertainment where he recorded his first track with Laxis Gee.

After high school, he pursued a marketing degree in tertiary education where he received his diploma.

In 2008, tragedy struck. Cody lost his father. This unfortunate event made him more focused than ever to succeed in music. He started to see music not only as a hobby but a way to get great life his family. He began to battle other upcoming rappers on the radio and is yet to date undefeated. His childhood friend/manager Mark Odarno, assisted Cody to record his first single, “screen saver”. The single got radio play and was well liked by the listeners and Dj’s.

New doors got open for Cody when he arrived in the USA in 2010. He wasted no time at all to link up with Nana ‘Phubu’ Opoku of Kontinental Inc, a Washington DC based entertainment company. With Cody been in Chicago, Phubu introduced his new protege to Clement Young Vim of Hood Africans. A group well acclaimed in the Chi-town area.

With the heavy bass beats of Mobeatz, Cody ripped his first single ‘Haters Nightmare’ ft Young Vim with harsh lyrics that speaks to the core. The hunger in him was ever so evident on this track and in no time it became a hit in the underground circuit.

The future looks bright for Cody Banks and his new label. An avid Christian, he puts God first in all hs doings. He claims his musical inspiration comes from the likes of 2pac, Biggie, Easy E, NWA, Big L, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Eminem, Bird Man and Rick Ross.

With a new album in the works, Cody looks to capture not just the ear of his listeners but their hearts as well. His story is every man or woman’s story. A hunger to succeed in life, not by any means necessary but by hard word and dedication to the art. His new label manager described him as – “a true diamond in the ruff. Cody is a true gem that only needs some sharpening and he will be a force to reckon with”

Most part of the Hiphop and Hiplife game in Ghana has been dominated by male artistes, but there have been some female artistes who have held their own with their male counterparts and one of such female artistes is no other than Tiffany.

Tiffany Owusu, as she is known in private life, is also well known for her song ‘How We Do It’ featuring Richie of Lynx Entertainment.

She has also shown her lyrical skills on stage. Tiffany has proven that she has lyrical skills on songs like ‘Aboa Bi’, ‘I Can Do It’ and ‘Throw Money’.

Gradually, if she stays on point, she will establish herself as a top notch lyricist and open the doors for future female rap artistes.

Tiffany was influenced by everyday music on radio, music videos on TV and even church music as she was growing up. Tiffany has worked with Lynx Entertainment for some time now and is very conversant with their ways.

On the other hand, Lynx believes in the creativity and exceptional talent of the rap diva, which has contributed to their exceptional working relationship.

The ‘Fake London boy’ crooner will soon release her debut album, ‘Me Y3 Dehye3’, which has the hit song ‘Fake London boy’.

The 24-year-old has graced shows like the Fat Joe in Ghana Concert, Rick Ross in Ghana, 020 Live, 4syte Music Video awards to mention but a few.

She has done collaborative works with the likes of Asem, Sarkodie, Mugeez, Chase and Captain Planet. Tiffany is grateful to her manager, Charles Adu Koranteng, and her fans for their supports

Ghanaian musician Nana Akua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel has been granted bail.

This was confirmed by Musiga President Diana Hopeson in an interview with Joy News’ Israel Laryea on Wednesday.

Mzbel was remanded in prison custody and charged with eight counts including assault on a public officer and obstruction of public officer from performing his duties.

She was alleged to have pounced on a police man who had attempted to reprimand her driver for breaching road traffic regulations.

She was later remanded by a Circuit Court in Accra.

Musiga president Diana Hopeson had early on appealed to the police to temper justice with mercy.

Her appeal appears to have been heard by the court which has now allowed bail.

Mrs Hopeson cannot immediately tell when the musician will return to court to answer the charges brought against her by the police.

[postlink] https://xclusiveght.blogspot.com/2011/06/tema-musicians-down-mics-for-boots.html[/postlink] For the third year running, celebrated music stars in Tema will be relinquishing their lyrical skills for the football pitch for the Tema All Stars Soccer Fiesta scheduled for June 18 at the Tema Sports Stadium.

From its humble beginnings two years ago, the soccer fiesta has been held in Tema Communities 7 and 4 but this year’s, according to organisers, is going to be bigger.

Hiplife artiste, D Cryme, known in real life as Darlington Kwasi Agyekum Gilverson, an organiser and a ‘wanna be’ striker told Myjoyonline.com in an interview Wednesday that, “this year’s event is the first soccer fiesta event to be staged in Tema.”

He noted that past events were in smaller packages but this year’s will see both old and new musicians in Tema joining forces and taking to the pitch for a good cause.

This year’s soccer fiesta is under the theme; Keeping fit, Entertaining and Driving away Cholera with all gate proceeds going to aid charity.

Tema for some time now is holding the mantle as Ghana’s hiplife music home, boasting of musical greats such as Sarkodie, Nana Boroo, D Cryme, R2Bees, Stay Jay, Dadie Opanka, Keche, Macho Rapper and with the induction of new residents, 4x4, Praye, Ayigbe Edem, A-Plus and Nframa into that community, this year’s event promises to be a huge blast.

This year’s Tema All Stars Soccer Fiesta is supported by the Tema General Hospital who, according to organisers, will use the event to educate the youth on cholera.

The various artistes will be divided into four groups who will play each other until a winner emerges.

An exciting twist to this year’s event is the invitation granted to Tema’s fiercest rivals, Accra, to grace the event. This invitation is coming ahead of a planned major friendly football match between the two – Tema and Accra.

There will be a huge musical concert after the match where some of the stars will take turns to treat their fans to good music and exciting performances.

After that concert will be a pool party at the Kesdem Hotel followed by an after party at the Barcadis Nite Club.

The day also happens to be Dadie Opanka’s birthday and on which night he premieres a video.

[postlink] https://xclusiveght.blogspot.com/2011/06/obour-promises-to-improve-lot-of.html[/postlink]
The fifth President of the Musicians Union of Ghana would be named among these candidates: Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Obour, Nana Tuffour and Willi Roi - on August 18, 2011 in Tamale at the 5th National Congress of the Union, MUSIGA has announced.

And one of the favourites for the seat, top hiplifer, Bice Osei Kuffour a.k.a Obour thinks his eventual election to the highest position among Ghanaian musicians would result in an improved recognition and respect for the profession as well as contribute to improving the general standard of living of the musicians.

What would be his first plan of action should he become the one Mrs. Hopeson hands over the mantle to in late August, the king of social responsibility projects said, “First and foremost Madam Hopeson has started a large number of positive projects that I think requires continuation, I would ensure they are so furthered.”

Obour was however quick to add that “don’t get me wrong, four years cannot solve all the problems of musicians but we can solve certain critical problems that can lay positive foundation to finding ever lasting solutions.”

Obour who chalks his tenth year in professional music business with six albums to his credit, has since 2008 been working closely as the MUSIGA Youth Organiser under the current MUSIGA President, Mrs. Diana Hopeson.

“And I can be proudly associated with a major success Mrs. Hopeson has chalked in improving unity among musicians. In the past few years I have been part of the mobilization of, especially the youth, to various MUSIGA activities. So far, I will rate the MUSIGA Unity level at 55%, and hope to improve this to over 90% within my first term in office.

“I have plans to ensure that in the short to long [term], musicians are recognized and respected when in Ghana, traveling out of Ghana or working abroad. As a young musician myself, who is very close to most of the musicians, I know most of our pressing problems and would be in the best position to learn even more and help solve them. I believe musicians, dominated by the youth, would find [it easier] (among my other candidates) to approach their young president to discuss and suggest solutions to making their lives better,” he said.

“Music business in Ghana itself is drastically in the down surge,” the CEO of family Tree Entertainment, one of the most active music labels in Ghana - reiterates and continues: “though MUSIGA is not directly in the business of interfering with individual businesses of musicians, I think that a lot of the people interested in joining or investing in this business of music need to be educated on how it works effectively.

"I have plans to activate on quarterly basis, Proactive Seminars to be run by people who understand the business and have proven track record to help so-called record labels add some professionalism to our business. Quality communication would be a priority and that’s why a journal/periodical for the association would be launched and our website would be effectively run with updated database of MUSIGA membership.”

Obour who claims to be in touch with people with solid know-how of the industry would, when elected president, open a special office to support the industry (especially record labels) in ways of doing this business professionally to attract more people.

“Musicians would then take their business much more seriously instead of like a hobby" he said, adding "also, I have a few people in high places and would now be in the position to lobby to get support from both private and Government.”

“With a unified front and creditability, we will then be able to re-forward our case to the financial world who would then have trust in us to help create products to support the industry”, he said. Also a unified front will aid our collective bargaining. We will be able to demand better rewards for our services and better policies from government.”

Since he announced his intention to stand for election, Obour said “I have had plenty assurances from a large number of musicians who have pledged to support my presidency and together help build a successful front beneficial to all, in the shortest possible time. Ghanaian Musicians at home and abroad would be encouraged to join the association to move it forward. A full content of my plan will be outlined in the coming weeks.”

Whether Obour would be able to make his dream of helping improve the industry come to pass depends on the decision of over 130 delegates in Tamale on August 18. Obour returns to Ghana on June 16, 2011.

Obour promises to improve the lot of musicians when elected MUSIGA President

The church leaders from James town Methodist  where Guru Shot his recent video 'Mmaa Kuo' have threaten fire on the artiste if he does not take the video off air

According to the leaders, the artiste stood and used places in the church where he was not suppose to use, hence it sounds like a mockery to their supreme God.

Guru, who expected his PR, host of hot gossip show on TV3 to have defended him rather saw the public relations officer blowing the story in the public domain as that did not go too well with the rapper.

According to the PR, Babiee Dappah, her job on the hot gossip show is to reveal gossips that are not just mere rumors, hence when the story was difficult to do looking at the fact that its revolves around her own artiste.

Rapper Sarkodie has told News-One that he does not take any alcoholic beverage. “This is not because I feel taking alcohol is bad but I just don’t feel like taking it,” the Tema-based award winning rap artiste explained and disclosed that he had stuck to his childhood habit and took in soft drinks and fruit juices.

This is quite different from what pertains within the showbiz industry where the use of alcohol and hard drugs is not uncommon.

The onetime MTN Ghana Music Awards multiple winner further told News-One that he was a very religious person and fellowshipped at the Full Gospel Church. He however did not mention his religious belief as reason for not taking alcoholic drinks.

Sarkodie’s comment was a follow-up answer to a question on whether he was likely to grow dreadlocks in the near future, considering his current hair style.
He said though there were currently no plans of growing his hair into locks, he might do so in future depending on how and what his orientation would be at that time.

This year, Sarkodie had changed his looks with his latest hairstyle. He left the edges of the hair well shaped and trimmed but left the entire hair over grown than usual.

Some of his fans have stated that Sarkodie looked better in his previous hairstyle. “There is no name for my new hairstyle; it is a little bit busty. I just did it. It is a change of look. You know in showbiz you don’t have to look boring every time; you have to change your looks once a while else you would be seen as boring. My previous look is nice but when it changed, people were like ‘wow, Sarkodie, it is nice, it is nice’. That will create the buzz. You need to come in the papers. They need to talk about you, so you have to do something,” he said.

Sarkodie is among the crème de la crème of musicians billed to rock the stage at Empire Entertainment’s upcoming event dubbed ‘Ghana Meets Naija’. The event is scheduled for July 1 and will also host some top guns from Nigeria’s music industry.

Sarkodie sounded optimistic about presenting a clean and perfect show at the event. “I can’t predict what I am about to do but I always don’t let Ghanaians down. By all means I will have a good show. This is the first time fans will see Sarkodie after the Fabolous show; they should come and experience it themselves.”

Currently, he is rated as Ghana’s fastest rapper but the chap believes his dreams have not yet materialized: “I have a very big dream and I have not achieved that yet,” he told News-One.
